Measure the height of anything with your phone

Doors, ceilings, desks, a TV on the wall, a growing plant or your dog. Point your phone camera, tap the floor, aim at the top, and get the height in feet and centimetres. No app, nothing uploaded.

What you can measure

Anything that stands on the floor, or any point above it. Tap the floor directly below the edge you care about, then aim at the top of that edge.

Door

Standard US interior door: 80 in (203 cm)

Floor at the door frame, then the top of the frame.

Ceiling

Common ceiling heights: 8 ft (244 cm) or 9 ft (274 cm)

Floor where it meets the wall, then the corner where the wall meets the ceiling.

TV on the wall

Many people aim for the screen centre near 42 in (107 cm) for a sofa

Floor below the TV, then the middle of the screen.

Kitchen counter

Standard counter height: 36 in (91 cm)

Floor below the front edge, then the top of the edge.

Desk or table

Typical desk and dining table: 28-30 in (71-76 cm)

Floor below the front edge, then the top of the edge.

Fridge or wardrobe

Many full-size fridges: 66-70 in (168-178 cm)

Floor at the front, then the top front corner.

Plant or tree

Great for tracking growth over months

Floor or soil at the stem, then the tallest leaf.

Dog

Vets and breeders measure to the shoulder (withers)

Floor at the front paws, then the top of the shoulder blades.

How to measure the height of an object with your phone

  1. Open the camera. Open this page on your phone and tap Measure an object. On a computer you will see a QR code that opens the page on your phone.
  2. Let it calibrate. Point at the floor and move the phone slowly in a loop. When the floor is found the phone buzzes and the + button appears.
  3. Tap the floor right below the edge. Stand 1 to 2 metres (3 to 6 feet) back. Put the circle on the floor directly under the front edge of the object and tap +.
  4. Aim at the top of that same edge. Tilt up slowly. The live number follows the circle. When it sits on the top edge, tap + to lock it in.

Why we built this object height tool

Measuring the height of a ceiling, a wardrobe or a TV on the wall with a tape usually takes two people or a ladder, and the tape bends before it reaches the top. Phone measuring apps can do it, but they have to be installed first. We already had a live AR measurer that finds the floor and measures a person's height in the browser, so we opened the same engine up for things: anything that stands on the floor, or any point above it.

The second reason is honesty about what a phone can do. Camera measuring is good for "about how tall is this?" and not for cutting a worktop to the millimetre, so the page says what accuracy to expect instead of promising more.

What this tool measures

It measures one thing: the vertical height from a point on the floor up to a point above it. The steps in the code:

  • Tracking: on Android, Chrome's WebXR with hit testing (backed by Google's ARCore); on iPhone, the 8th Wall engine by Niantic Spatial running in Safari. Both build a 3-D map in real metres from the camera and motion sensors.
  • Floor point: when you tap +, the point where the aiming dot meets the floor is fixed in 3-D.
  • Top: as you tilt up, your line of sight is crossed with an upright plane through that floor point, facing you. The height of that crossing above the floor is the reading, and it updates live until you tap + again.
  • Range: object mode accepts 10 cm to 4 m. The result is shown in feet and inches, centimetres and inches; a reading between 150 and 230 cm can also name a well-known person within 2 cm of it.

On Android phones a reading is usually within about 2 to 3 cm; on iPhone the engine is in beta and can be less steady. Last checked 24 October 2026. What it does not measure: width, depth, a TV's diagonal, the distance to the object, or a point that is not directly above the floor point you tapped. Object readings are not saved as your own height.

Why this tool is different

  • No app. It runs in the phone's browser; on a computer, a QR code opens the page on your phone.
  • Measures real distances from tracking in metres, rather than estimating size from a photo.
  • The camera feed is processed on your phone and nothing from it is sent to us.
  • It guides you: the screen says step back, tilt up or tilt down when it cannot read a height.
  • Expected accuracy is stated on this page, beta label included. Free, no account.

Tips for an accurate reading

  • Measure an edge that faces you. The camera measures straight up from the floor point, so the top you aim at must be directly above it. The front edge of a desk works; the back corner does not.
  • Good light and a floor with some texture. Carpet, wood and tiles are easy. Plain shiny floors take longer to find.
  • Stand back. One to two metres works best. Too close and the screen asks you to step back.
  • Measure twice. If two readings agree within a centimetre or two, you can trust them.

Common heights to check against

Typical sizes vary by country and maker, so treat these as a rough guide, not a rule. A standard US interior door is 80 inches (203 cm) tall. Kitchen counters are usually 36 inches (91 cm). Desks and dining tables are usually 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm). Ceilings in many homes are 8 feet (244 cm), with 9 feet (274 cm) common in newer houses.

Planning where things should go? Work out how high to mount a TV or the right desk height for your body, then check the result with the camera.

Questions

Can my phone measure the height of an object?

Yes. Open this page on your phone, tap Measure an object, find the floor, tap the floor right below the object, then aim at its top. The camera works out the height from where the two points sit in 3-D space. It works in the browser, with no app to install.

How accurate is it?

On Android phones with ARCore it is usually within about 2 to 3 cm for things between knee height and a ceiling, if you stand 1 to 2 metres away and the floor is well lit. On iPhone it is in beta and can be less steady. For anything where a few millimetres matter, such as cutting a worktop, check with a tape measure.

Why do I have to tap the floor first?

The floor is the reference. The camera measures straight up from the point you tap, so tap the floor directly below the edge you want to measure, then aim at the top of that same edge.

Can it measure width or a TV screen size?

Not yet. It measures height: from the floor up to a point. To measure how high a TV is mounted, tap the floor below the TV and aim at the middle of the screen.

Why is the number not showing?

You may be too close (step back to 1 or 2 metres), aiming below the object or above it. The screen tells you which: step back, tilt up or tilt down.

Does it upload my camera feed?

No. The measuring runs on your phone and nothing from the camera is sent to us.

Can I measure something that is not on the floor?

Only its height above the floor, such as a shelf, a light switch or a window sill. Tap the floor directly below it, then aim at it.
